Gov’t urges court to uphold health law’s individual mandate

WASHINGTON — Defending President Barack Obamas signature health care overhaul, the administration is urging the Supreme Court to uphold the contentious heart of the law, the requirement that individuals buy insurance or pay a penalty.

The administration filed a written submission with the court Friday describing the 2010 law as an appropriate response to a crisis in the national healthcare market.

The justices will hear arguments in the high courts biggest case this term over three days in late March. The outcome, expected in late June, has the potential to affect President Barack Obamas bid for re-election.

Two men were arrested early Monday morning after a stolen vehicle and assorted property were recovered in the Moonglo area.

Greater Sudbury Police say officers checking out a report of a suspicious person going in and out of driveways in the Moonglo subdivision about 3:30 am Monday saw a man duck into a backyard as they drove by. A check of the backyard turned up two men.

A check determined the two men were in possession of items stolen from a number of vehicles. As well, one of the men had a set of car keys.

A check of the area turned up a stolen Grand Am reported stolen from the Sunrise Ridge area. Inside the vehicle was a quantity of stolen property.

TWO men were arrested by Rizal Highway Patrol Group (RHPG) operatives while the suspects unload assorted goods from a van in Teresa, Rizal, early yesterday morning.

C/Insp. Mark Joseph Laygo said he received information that an aluminum closed van with plate number ZIX-711 loaded with assorted boxes was seen suspiciously parked in Sitio Buhay na Tubig, Bgy. May-iba, Teresa, Rizal.

Akebia spins off new drug business

Akebia Therapeutics has spun off a company, Aerpio Therapeutics, to perform clinical-stage biotechnology development.

Aerpio’s lead program focuses on a potential treatment for diabetic macular edema, which is a swelling of the retina that can cause vision loss. Another project is targeted to inflammatory bowel disease.

Akebia is a Blue Ash-based pharmaceutical company focused on anemia. It closed in April on a $22 million round of financing.

“The formation of Aerpio allows us to focus and attract resources to the substantial opportunity we believe our lead programs represent,” Joseph Gardner, CEO of Aerpio and Akebia, said in a press release.
